Waiting for Apples

Waiting for Apples
(in the Big Apple)

An Open Letter to

Steve Jobs (Apple CEO)

Honorable Michael Bloomberg (New York City Mayor)

Honorable David Paterson (New York State Governor)

Honorable Hillary Clinton (New York Senator)

Honorable Charles Schumer (New York Senator)

and

The Good People of New York State.

July 4th, 2008

Happy Independence Day!

We the people love Apples.
Apple iPhones!
The Big Apple!
Apples grown locally in New York State!

We are here on a mission to set a new Guinness World Record for "longest time waiting in line to buy something."

Until now, there was never anything we felt excited enough to wait for a ridiculous amount of time. We can't wait for the iPhone 3G.

As the old adage states, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." So, for the next seven days, expect to see us eating a lot of Apples, and sharing Apples with our friends. We will have local apple farmers deliver us apples every day. And as the line grows, we will give locally-grown apples to everyone waiting on line.

We are excited about the new Apple iPhone, and the Independence it will provide us. We are so excited, in fact, that we have arrived an entire week in advance of the on-sale date. Coincidence or not, we think that Independence Day is a great day to begin Waiting For Apples!

We have come from all parts of the country, and even from abroad, to set a new record for longest time waiting in line to stimulate the economy of NYC. We could have set this record anywhere, and on anything. But, we heart NYC, the Big Apple. And we love Apples grown in and near NYC. So, what more nourishing place than right across from Central Park, the "lungs" of New York City.

We will celebrate many elements of the New York City's PlaNYC 2030 sustainability agenda:

* We will spend a lot of time in a great public space, around the clock.
* We will use mobile solar power from Solar1.
* We will drink NYC's renowned tap water.
* We will have local healthy food (especially Apples) delivered by our community gardener friends, Greenmarket farmers, and locavore restauranteurs via bicycles and pedicabs.
* We will compost our foodscraps, to help sustain our fragile soil.
* And most importantly, we will talk to whoever happens to stop by about local organic farming as a critical element to sustainable healthy living, food security, youth education, and climate change mitigation.

We have many theme songs, among them:

* The Longest Time by Billy Joel,
* La Isla Bonita by Madonna,
* Livin' on a Prayer by Jon Bon Jovi,
* Rockin' in the Free World by Neil Young,
* Living in the Promised Land by Willie Nelson,
* Across the Universe by the Beatles and also Fiona Apple, and
* Feeling Groovy (59th Street Bridge Song) by Simon and Garfunkel.

Our theme album is:

* More Songs about Buildings and Food by The Talking Heads.

By the way, we are not just buying iPhones for ourselves. We will also purchase iPhones for Barack Obama and John McCain, because the world needs an American president to "think different!"

Feel free to stop by and grab an Apple!

In life, liberty, and the pursuit of apple happiness,

TheWhoFarmers

Athea Aina, Brian, Casey, Dane, Daniel, Dori, Heyward, Lloyd, Kaitlin, Makiko and Yumi.

91% of Japanese Users Would Not Buy 3G iPhone

By Wayne

ISHARE from the survey data show that 91 percent of Japan's mobile phone users have no plans to buy Apple's iPhone cell phone.

Japan's Softbank Mobile had planned to launch in Japan, and the main customers are from 20-49 ages. But the current situation seems to be worse, only 8.9 percent persons stated to buy one, 6.2 percent were willing to master it as a first phone, and only 2.7 percent think that iPhone would be their second phone.

In July 2007, iSHARE conducted a survey on that iPhone of slightly better than the current survey results, 9.6 percent persons would like to buy one.

According to survey it shows that 77.1 percent persons think that replaceable phone battery was a must, which is the reason why the strange phenomenon is happening in the Japanese market. More for the Japanese have been used to the traditional cell phones, such as Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, and so on.

Android vs. iPhone: ‘This is where the pain happens’

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/

One of the perils of writing about technology for a monthly print magazine is that by the time your story hits the newsstands, it risks being overtaken by events.

Such is the fate of Daniel Roth’s long piece on Google’s Android project in the July issue of Wired.

Entitled "Google’s Open Source Android Phone Will Free the Wireless Web" and available here, it’s a well-reported behind-the-scenes look at Google’s effort to do for the mobile Web what Microsoft did for the desktop: provide the platform on which everybody else must dance.

Apple’s iPhone plays the same bit part in Roth’s story that the original Macintosh played in Microsoft Windows’: a inspiring example to show what’s possible — and perhaps be mined for stealable ideas — while the standard-setting steamroller grabs that 90% market share. Here’s the key paragraph:

"Those hoping for a new gadget to rival the iPhone finally understood that Google had something radically different in mind. Apple’s device was an end in itself — a self-contained, jewel-like masterpiece locked in a sleek protective shell. Android was a means, a seed intended to grow an entire new wireless family tree."

Google’s plan may yet work. But for Wired, the timing of Roth’s piece could hardly be worse. Not only did it arrive in the middle Apple’s carefully orchestrated drumroll for the July 11 iPhone 3G launch, but it landed just as the Wall Street Journal was reporting that Google’s plans have hit two serious roadblocks.

The first roadblock is the carriers. As Roth reports, Google was already having trouble getting the mobile phone operators to play along. The country’s two biggest — Verizon and AT&T , with a combined market share of 54% — passed. "There wasn’t anything viable we were willing to entertain," Verizon Wireless spokesperson Jeffrey Nelson told Roth. So Google went with the third and fourth best, T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel . Now the Journal reports that T-Mobile won’t have any Android phones ready before the fourth quarter and has been sucking up so much of Google’s time with its demands that Sprint won’t have anything this year at all. Ominously, China Mobile, the sleeping giant Google was counting on in the Far East, but which has also been in talks with Apple, has also pushed back its Android launch.

Even more critical, if Google hopes to build a vibrant software platform, are the snarls developers are running into. As the Journal reports:

"The Android software has yet to win broad support from large mobile-software developers. Some say it is difficult to develop programs while Google is making changes as it finishes its own software….."

"Some developers say it is easier to work with Apple’s programming tools than Google’s because of the familiarity with the company’s Macintosh operating system. …"

"Andy Rubin, director of mobile platforms at Google, says managing the software-development effort while giving its partners the opportunity to lobby for new features takes time. ‘This is where the pain happens,’ he says."

Apple, by contrast, has a waiting list of carriers around the world willing to sell the iPhone and thousands of programmers eager to write for the device; at its developers conference two weeks ago, Apple had to turn them away once the first 5,200 spots were filled.

"I’m rooting for Android, big-time," writes one high-profile developer, John Gruber, in his widely-read Daring Fireball blog. "It’s easy to imagine how Android, as an overall platform, could wind up being better than the iPhone."

But that’s a big if, he adds, before the paragraphs that cut to the crux of the issue:

"The big advantage Apple has with the iPhone is that they control the entire product, top to bottom. The case, the chipsets, the OS, the user interface. Apple knows exactly what the screen will look like when a brand new iPhone is turned on for the first time. Google’s dependence on hardware and carrier partners puts the final product out of their control — and into the control of companies whose histories have shown them to be incompetent at design and hostile to users."

"I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but my hunch is that the only way we’ll see an iPhone-caliber Android phone is if Google does what they’ve said they’re not going to do, which is to design and ship their own reference model “gPhone”. That doesn’t mean Android won’t still be successful in some sense if it remains on its current course, but that I don’t expect it to be successful in the “holy shit is this awesome!” sense that the iPhone is."

Nobody expects anything quite so awesome out of it, but the other big news in mobile phone operating systems Tuesday was Nokia’s decision to purchase the 52% of Symbian it didn’t already own, combine the different OS versions into one platform, and make it open and free. Symbian dominates the global cellphone market with 60% of installed base, according to the Nokia press release. Here’s Silicon Alley Insider’s Dan Frommer take on the acquisition:

"Buying Symbian won’t help Nokia build sexier-looking, high-end gadgets. But in theory, Nokia’s ownership will speed up Symbian’s platform development and could allow Nokia — its biggest customer — to come out with more phones, faster. That’s important as new competitors enter the market with sexier, more exciting products…"

What to Look for in DVD Copy Program

Revised by Wayne

You may like a DVD and may want to copy it to a blank DVD to save the cost of buying the original DVD from the market. Is copying of DVDs possible? Yes - with the help of DVD burning software such as DVD ripper. Most of the DVD ripper software is shareware which means that you can try it for a limited period after which you must pay for the full version.

DVD Software for Conversion

You can use software like Pavtube DVD Copy to copy DVD movies with a single click. You can even use it to copy DVD movies to your computer and iPod. Most of the software for copying DVD movies is multi language. If you have the latest Windows Vista operating system, check that the software is compatible with it.

Security Settings

If you try to copy original movies with software like Nero you will see that copying is not allowed if the DVD is protected with either, RC, CSS, or UOPS technology. However with special DVD ripping software it is possible to remove this protection (the software removes protection automatically) and copy movies freely.

Copying DVD Movies on Other Devices

As mentioned before, you can now also copy DVD movies on portable devices such as an iPod, smart phone, or Sony PSP. You can even convert the DVD format into another format such as MP4, AVI or ASF. You can copy the original DVD movie in multiple copy modes such as copying the entire DVD disc, the main movie only without the extras, or just a part of the movie by selecting the split movie feature. Most software is compatible with all single layer DVDs as well as the dual layer ones. The copied video can then be played back on the computer, DVD player, or a portable device.

User Friendly Software

DVD copying software is extremely easy to use, and when all the settings have been configured correctly copying DVD movies requires just a single click. Trial software may contain a watermark that is included in the converted movie, but the paid version of the same software will not include any watermark and the movie copied will be the same as the original. You can split the movies to double layer DVDs and copy them to two single layer DVDs, and can quickly copy region-protected DVDs as well. The movie format that is finally converted can be in a different format such as AVI, 3GP, MP4 for Apple or Sony, and even MPEG and WMV.

Short Time to Copy

Copying DVD movies is very easy at present। The movies can be copied in a very short amount of time and you don't have to spend much money on buying the original DVDs; you can simply buy a blank DVD and copy movies from the original DVDs.

How to Import CD Tracks to iTunes and Sync Your iPod

By Wayne

This is an article to help you to get familiar with basic functionality of the iPod and music management software, and it will let you enjoy the amazing CD album on your iPod freely at the same time.

First, make sure you’re running the latest version of iTunes for Mac or Windows; you can get the latest one from apple.com if it’ necessary. I will show you the details of how to import CD and sync the iPod.

Then follow the instructions below to start building your song library:

1.
Go to iTunesEditPreferencesAdvanced to set up the format you wish to import your music as.

2. On CD Insert you choose Ask to Import CD.

3. Importing Using, select the AAC Encoder is better; you can also choose the AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, or WAV Encoder as you like.

4. In Setting, set as High Quality (128kbps), Higher Quality (256kbps) or Spoken Podcast, besides, you can Custom the Setting as well.

5. The details of the audio information is listed above.

Note: Apple’s default preference is 128Kbps AAC encoding. You may choose a higher bitrate to encode if you wish; you will experience higher sound quality, but each song will take up more space, meaning you will be able to fit less music on your iPod. While many agree that AAC offers superior quality over MP3 at equivalent bitrates, iTunes also allows you to choose MP3 encoding if you need greater compatibility with other players and devices. The AIFF and WAV options are for special uses only। In most cases, you will not want to use these uncompressed audio codecs, because it creates very large file sizes.

After you finish your advanced encoding preferences, the rest is quite easy.

1. Insert an audio CD into your computer.

2. Open iTunes, and it will recognize your inserted CD and the title will appear with a CD icon next to iPod DEVICES.

3. Click on the CD name to bring up a list of all the songs on the CD. Songs on the CD will be automatically checked.

4. span lang="EN-US">A message “Would like to import Audio CD ‘Yesterday’ into iTunes library? will be promptly shown on the interface of iTunes; click “Yes”.

Note: If iTunes does not import songs automatically, click the “Import CD” button at the bottom right hand corner of iTunes।

5. Checked songs will begin to be uploaded.
The song is indicated by an orange icon that appears to the left of the song being currently uploaded. Uploaded songs that are green marked will be automatically added to your iTunes LIBRARY, and of course the songs have loaded on your computer hard disk.

6. When all songs have uploaded onto your computer, you can go to the LIBRARY of iTunes and click the Music to show the CD album songs.

7. Go EditSelect All, left click to drag and drop all the selected songs to the iPod music list; then the songs will sync your iPod completely.

Note: If you set the library auto-sync your iPod, you just eject your iPod and connect it with your computer again, and everything in this LIBRARY will be automatically synchronized to your iPod।

At last the CD album songs will be listed on your iPod music list. Once your LIBRARY has been fully digitized, you can start to truly enjoy your music through the features and simplicity of iTunes and the iPod. At the same time, you can right-click to Get Info of your album and manage them (add lyrics or rename the songs .etc) as well.

Actual price of iPhone 3G $524 / $624

http://planet-iphones.com/forums/

According to Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner, AT&T is paying a subsidy of $325 for the new iPhone 3G. If this is accurate, the iPhone 3G could cost as much as $524 and $624 for the 8 and 16 gig versions respectfully when sold unsubsidized. It should be taken into consideration that the typical smartphone gets a subsidy of about $200.

Reiner also added that AT&T is paying Apple an extra $100 for subscribers signed up in Apple stores which brings the commission to a total of $425 for Apple. All in all, Apple is getting the same revenue for the 3G iPhone as it received for the 1st gen, only now all the payments are coming up front.
